Transnational research-report
The intersection of LGBTQI+ identity and migration presents a number of complex challenges that are often overlooked in general discussions of asylum policies and integration strategies. In Italy, as in many other European countries, the absence of official statistics on LGBTQI+ migrants and refugees hinders efforts to develop targeted policies and support systems. Despite this gap, research and reports by civil society organizations (CSOs) and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) highlight the growing number of asylum seekers fleeing persecution based on sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI). However, even in the arrival territory, LGBTQI+ asylum seekers continue to experience discrimination, violence, and exclusion, both within reception facilities and in general.
