Report

The aim of the report was to map volunteer training needs in Italy in the field of playwork. The methodology used included both analysis of websites and reports and interviews with stakeholders and experts.

The research aims to provide an overview of the needs in Italy as a whole; but more in depth information was only available for Sicily. The research was focused on centres providing childcare, afterschool and play activities.

The main finding was that the main issue in the area of playwork is the lack of services ( there is a need for more state/regional-funded structures or play projects, as well as the need for funding for private initiatives), rather than the lack of trained volunteers or staff. However, it also shows that training for playworkers is very scarce, and that teachers, educators and playworkers are not obliged to “learn how to play”.
