How can we meet the new demands of a more sustainable approach to the management of the European building stock and architectural heritage?

Nowadays, interventions in the existing building stock have been a very active construction subsector in all European countries, partly because the global concept of urban regeneration is considered one of the main sustainable development goals of the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda, in order to make inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable cities. However, the European restauration, rehabilitation and maintenance sector is lacking qualified experts to tackle the increasing challenges regarding an adequate management of both, the European existing building stock and architectural heritage.

Partners from five different European countries, Spain, Italy, Cyprus, Lithuania and Ireland, among them four universities, are forming a knowledge alliance in order to face this challenge through the Erasmus+ KA203 Strategic Partnership in Higher Education “Smart Rehabilitation 3.0 – Innovating professional skills for the existing building sector”.

The project’s main goal is the creation of the profession “Expert in Rehabilitation” by defining the profile, providing training opportunities using massive open online courses (MOOCs) as well as create a specialised online library enabling university teachers, students and professionals from the sector with best practices, interesting links, materials and information on technological innovation and innovative interventions.

The Spanish coordinator Rehabmed, CESIE and AEEBC Limited, joined by the University of Palermo (UNIPA), the Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya, the Kauno Technologijos Universitetas and the University of Cyprus, met for the first time in Barcelona (Spain) from the 18th to 19th November 2019, with the objective to adequately organise the roles and responsibilities in the project as well as the plan the Smart Rehabilitation 3.0 project’s first steps.

During the first year of the project, the partnership will define the new profession of “Expert in Rehabilitation”, collect valuable information, materials and links for the specialised online library as well as start designing the training programmes, which will later be available as 4 MOOCs. The partnership is highly experienced in different areas of rehabilitation and restauration, thus already having laid the basis for a successful definition and creation of the new professional profile. The involvement of business and experts from the sector will further facilitate the project activities.
