How can we address sensitive topics such as relationships, sexual health, and emotional wellbeing in an open, inclusive, and informed way? One of the answers lies in empowering those who work with young people every day. This was the main goal of the S.A.F.E Training Course, an international learning experience that took place at Borgo Danilo Dolci, in Sicilia.
A place that encouraged dialogue
For seven days, youth workers from Italy, Spain, France, Cyprus, and Lithuania took part in an intensive training course in a venue surrounded by nature and overlooking the sea. The peaceful setting fostered active listening, meaningful reflection, and the development of authentic connections among participants.
The Training Course adopted participatory and non-formal education methodologies to explore Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) in an engaging and practical way. Through experiential activities, role-playing, storytelling, group work, and interactive digital tools, participants experimented with innovative educational approaches that they will now be able to apply within their own local communities.
The learning journey focused on five key thematic areas:
- Culture and sexuality;
- Sexual health;
- Gender identity;
- Healthy relationships;
- Prevention of gender-based violence.
Each module provided practical tools to support participants in developing greater awareness while promoting dialogue, respect, and inclusion. One of the most valuable aspects of the experience was the intercultural exchange among participants. Youth workers with different professional backgrounds and personal experiences came together to create a safe space where they could challenge stereotypes, share good practices, and learn from one another.
The Training Course concluded with A S.A.F.E. Space, a collective artistic expression session where participants showcased their reflections, creative outputs, and ideas developed throughout the week, turning learning into a shared and meaningful experience.
The knowledge and competences gained during the Training Course will continue to support participants long after the mobility has ended. The aim is to bring the newly-acquired skills and methodologies into their own organisations, contributing to the creation of increasingly safe, inclusive, and empowering environments for young people.
