Changing cities, habits, and beginning to discover a new culture is always very challenging. The 16 young Spaniards who have arrived in Sicily, thanks to ALMAdrid, know this well. They will be gaining work experience at companies and organizations in Palermo for four months. This experience represents not only a professional opportunity but also an important occasion for personal growth and openness to new realities.

What cultural differences might there be? How can one recognize that they are in a diverse and rich context? What could happen if they fail to understand the existing social and cultural “norms”?

The encounter with Sicilian culture, rich in ancient traditions and historical influences, could evoke not only curiosity but also challenges in adaptation. The pace of life, social relationships, communication styles, cuisine, and festivals are all elements that can make one feel distant from their roots. When in a new environment, differences should not be seen as obstacles but as opportunities for personal enrichment.

The initial training on “culture shock”, held upon their arrival in Palermo, aimed precisely at offering tools to better understand the phenomenon and prepare for the cultural transition.

During these sessions, new perspectives emerged on how to face difficulties and approach daily life in a city as different, yet as welcoming, as Palermo. The young people had the opportunity to reflect not only on the local culture but also on themselves, their expectations, and their prejudices, opening new paths of understanding and acceptance.

But this is just the beginning of their adventure in discovering Palermo! In the coming months, participants will have the chance to fully immerse themselves in Palermo’s life, experiencing the various facets of this vibrant and ever-evolving city. They will work closely with local communities, participating in social and cultural projects that will give them a deep understanding of Sicilian life.

Between excursions, cultural events, and moments of sharing with their Sicilian colleagues, they will have the opportunity to discover fascinating places, such as the historic markets of Ballarò and Vucciria, the architectural wonders of the old town, and the culinary traditions that make Sicily famous worldwide.

At the end of the four months, each of them will carry home not only new professional skills but also a cultural wealth full of experiences, encounters, and unforgettable memories. For more information about the project contact Giorgia Marinelli: giorgia.marinelli@cesie.org
