The tinkering as an innovative methodology to teach STEM at school
STEM*Lab – Search, Transmit, Excite, Motivate is a project funded by Impresa Sociale Con i Bambini with the aim of promoting an open school environment with the creation of places called STEM * Labs, designed to experiment innovative methodologies and resources for the STEM education in schools.
The acronym STEM refers to the disciplines of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, which represent the focus of the project. Several STEM * Labs will be established in different schools of Sicily, the region of Campania, Lombardy and Piedmont. These laboratories represent places of experimentation with students, who will have the opportunity to learn the STEM subjects through a direct and integrated approach.
On the basis of these premises, on the 7th and 8th of November 2019, the National Museum of Science and Technology “Leonardo da Vinci” organized a workshop targeted to the teachers and the workers of the following schools: the “Istituto Comprensivo Statale Amari Roncalli Ferrara” (Palermo), the “Istituto Comprensivo Statale Archimede – La Fata” (Partinico) and the “Liceo Scientifico Statale Santi Savarino” (Partinico).
CESIE took care of the logistic aspect of the event, as coordinator of the project at a regional level.
The workshop was focused on the educational methodology called tinkering, which promotes the learning of STEM subjects among children and young people through the stimulation of problem-solving skills and following the philosophy of “learning by doing”.
For the implementation of the workshop it has been used different recycling materials together with electronics and digital tools (such as Makey Makey cards) and coding programs (such as scratch).
During the first day of the workshop hosted by the “Liceo Scientifico Statale Santi Savarino” in Partinico, the trainers invited the participants to work together in different groups. After an overview about the main objectives of the tinkering methodology, the teachers had the chance to experiment with the materials prepared by the trainers and they shared the results achieved with the other participants.
The second day of the workshop, hosted by the “Istituto Comprensivo Statale Amari Roncalli Ferrara” in Palermo, the teachers were invited to reflect about the design of several educational activities to be implemented with their students within the STEM * Labs and about the functions of these labs.
At the end of the workshop, the achievements reached by the participants were related to the desire to experiment with the students the methodology of the tinkering, in order to give them the opportunities of a creative learning in the classroom and in the STEM * Labs, designed for this very reason.
