Peer to Peer Players: informative sessions on the responsible use of the web at the schools of Palermo

More than five hundred high school students from the city of Palermo have been involved in fourteen informative sessions on the responsible use of the web, thanks to the Peer to Peer Players project, coordinated by CESIE in collaboration with the Associazione Identità Sviluppo Integrazione (I.S.I.) Onlus and with the Department of Psychological, Pedagogical and Training Sciences of the Università degli Studi di Palermo, which is financed by the Presidency of the Council of Ministers - Drug Policies Department.
The information sessions were aimed at promoting the psychosocial well-being of young people, with special attention to the opportunities offered by the web and the risks arising from its misuse, such as violence, cyberbullying, extremist behaviours, violation of privacy, security, the acquisition of psychoactive substances harmful to health, and sites associated with addiction and not appropriate for minors.
Several high schools in the city of Palermo were involved during the information days, including the Liceo Magistrale Statale Regina Margherita, the Liceo Scientifico Statale Benedetto Croce, the Istituto di Istruzione Superiore "Damiani Almeyda-Crispi", the Istituto Tecnico Nautico Gioeni Trabia, the Istituto Superiore Statale "L. Einaudi-V.Pareto", the Istituto Tecnico Economico e per il Turismo "Marco Polo", the Istituto Professionale S.S.E.O.A. "Pietro Piazza". Both students and teachers involved expressed great satisfaction about the topics covered and about having had the opportunity to dialogue, in a perspective of mutual exchange of ideas and experiences, on issues relevant for both young people and adults.
Thanks to the project, it was possible to activate a strategic synergy with the schools involved, which hosted further info-days and training sessions focused on subjects related to Peer to peer players, such as fake news and critical thinking and on several current issues such as the phenomenon of radicalism and extremism and their meaning on the web.
Peer to Peer Players has also made it possible to launch a peer-counseling service, currently active, at two schools in the city of Palermo, the Liceo Magistrale Statale Regina Margherita and the Liceo Scientifico Statale Benedetto Croce. It has also made it possible to conduct research on the responsible use of the web and the risks deriving from the access to dangerous sites and the use of psychoactive substances. During its course, the project launched an ideas contest, for high school students in the city of Palermo. The goal of the ideas contest is the creation of a game App for smartphones and tablets, which will promote the topics of the project through a serious game. This game will be promoted in schools and will contain educational elements that will stimulate the students to reflect on the behaviours that can cause harm to health.
