Sicily is currently facing a persistent water crisis, which is putting regional agriculture under significant strain. This phenomenon, combined with the increasingly evident effects of climate change, calls for integrated and timely interventions. Among the fundamental actions is ensuring that the agricultural workforce is provided with training opportunities to prepare them to tackle current climate challenges and lead the transition towards more sustainable agricultural practices.
EVECSA responds directly to this need by offering cutting-edge learning opportunities and placing professional training at the forefront of regional development. The goal is to enable European agricultural operators to acquire the necessary skills to adopt climate-smart agricultural practices, thus promoting a green transition in agriculture in line with the European Green Deal.
Through the establishment of six Centers of Vocational Excellence (CoVEs) in six countries, EVECSA aims to enhance the quality, relevance, and attractiveness of professional training offerings for Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA). These CoVEs will collaborate through an international Platform of Professional Excellence (PoVE), contributing to shaping educational policies and practices conducive to sustainable food production, job opportunities, and well-being for all.
Presentation of the Sicily CoVe
The Vocational Excellence Center for Climate Smart Agriculture in Sicily, formed by CESIE, LAND and Coreras, was officially presented on May 9th during the second stakeholder forum entitled “Collaborative Innovation Ecosystems for Sustainable Development“, organized by the Center for Sustainability and Ecological Transition (CSTE) of the University of Palermo.
The Forum currently brings together over 100 regional stakeholders, including businesses, social enterprises, third sector actors, civil society, universities, and research institutions, with the aim of fostering crucial synergies and networks for achieving Sustainable Development Goals and making the territory more resilient in an increasingly globalized context.
Throughout the day, the importance of synergy and networking, fundamental values shared by both the CSTE and the EVECSA project, became evident. It is clear that the project’s objectives can only be achieved through collaboration among regional actors in the agricultural sector who share similar goals and, above all, through the integration of Vocational Education and Training in agriculture within skills ecosystems and knowledge triangles.
