CLARITY: Clear Language Actions Responding with Information for migrants in employment
Clarity is a two-year international project started in October 2009, funded within the framework of the European Union’s Leonardo Da Vinci – Transfer of Innovation sector programme with the aim of enhancing the quality and attractiveness of the European vocational education and training system.
CESIE in partnership with Point Europa (UK), Volkshilfe (AT), Pistes Solidaire (FR), INIT (DE), TREBAG (HU); SEC (RO) is trying to identify the learning needs for the occupational integration of immigrants from Palermo (first project phase).
The need to realise Clarity stems from the fact that many migrant workers do not have full linguistic knowledge of the country in which they work, migrant workers also attend basic training courses but most of them do not understand what is explained due to language limitations, finally, migrant workers often fail to understand the security systems and requirements related to their jobs. This is a risk for themselves, their colleagues, employers and the entire community.
Some jobs, in which migrant workers are commonly employed, are obliged to provide legally required, officially registered and standardised basic training (e.g. in childcare centres or centres for the elderly).
If workers do not understand what they are taught during training, this obligation is waived and migrant workers fall into unauthorised circumstances.
The Clarity project will provide new training material to support the basic conditions of migrant workers and will be translated into their language of origin.
Activities include: training for a small number of migrants who will act as multipliers of the acquired knowledge; examining the level of applicability and translation (into migrants’ languages) of existing training courses; identifying ways in which this basic mother tongue training can be provided in more languages and at workplaces in other sectors.
The Clarity project will not reduce the need for migrant workers to deepen their language skills in the host country, rather it will offer the possibility of recruiting migrants with poor language skills and promoting further basic training courses.
