The achievement of full inclusion in the labour market of people with special needs cannot be based solely on the training of these categories, but must include the creation of work environments in which diversity is not seen as a situation to be addressed on an as-needed basis, but as a possibility to which the work context and organisation must be ready to adapt, in order to ensure the well-being and development of all staff.

This is particularly true in the case of neurodiversity. For people with adult neurodiversity, the road to employment is difficult if not impossible, marked by barriers that are often more related to stigma than to the neurodiverse person’s actual ability to hold a given position.

From 2 to 6 May 2022, CESIE hosted a training event as part of the project Opportunities4autism – A spectrum of opportunities: training field professionals on how to recruit and support individuals with autism at the workplace. Opportunities4Autism aims to build and support an inclusive and welcoming culture in the workplace through the development of a training package aimed at managers and employers. The aim is to provide employers and managers with the tools to create welcoming workplaces and create a workplace culture in which all staff members can grow and contribute.

During the training event, 22 participants from Italy, Spain, Serbia, Poland and Cyprus had exclusive access to the first version of the tools provided by the project:

  • “Opportunities4autism” training programme aimed at vocational training teachers;
  • Handbook of “Opportunities4autism” addressed to vocational training teachers;
  • Opportunities4autism” practical guide addressed to employers.

During the event, several workshops tackled the topic of managing neurodiversity in the workplace, taking a closer look at the characteristics of people with Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and their potential in the world of work and outlining what adjustments a company or organisation can easily put in place to include people with ASDs in its staff.

Once finalised, these tools will be available at https://opportunities4autism.com/ in a dedicated e-learning Platform. The Opportunities4autism Platform is aimed at those who want to learn more about Autism Spectrum Disorders and understand how to implement viable and truly inclusive employment pathways for people with ASDs.

We invite all people interested in the topic to be part of the team that will test the platform and have access to the preview content. For information and participation, please contact alessia.valenti@cesie.org.
