An exciting new sports project has launched that will contribute to the improvement of good governance in sports organisations in Greece, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus and Italy to combat racism, discrimination and intolerance and promote participation and inclusivity.
The GoSPort project will aim to improve the knowledge of how sport organisations interpret, manage and prioritise social responsibility issues within their organisations, especially in terms of combatting violence and tackling racism, discrimination and intolerance, as well as in promoting human rights, social inclusion and equal opportunities.
Importantly, the project will explore how social responsibility is communicated within sport organisations, and will provide tools to sports organisations and professionals for better understanding the relationships among sports organisations, their stakeholders and society, and on effectively integrating social responsibility within their governance practices.
During the first partnership meeting held in Athens, hosted by KMOP, representatives from the partner organisations met to plan the implementation of the project.
The partnership shared information about good practices in their countries to promote social responsibility in the field of sport. Partners also planned the research phase which will identify the existing needs and challenges faced by sports organisations in integrating social responsibility within their governance practices and how sport organisations interpret, manage and prioritise social responsibility issues and how organizational governance influences social responsibility.
Addressing the objectives laid out in the European Commission White Paper on Sport (2007) and recognising that sport can play an important role in combatting discrimination and promoting human rights tolerance and social inclusion, the project will develop 3 main outputs;
- a comparative analysis report identifying common issues and differences, in order to build knowledge and understanding of sports organisations and relevant stakeholders on managing and prioritising social responsibility issues within their organisations;
- a guide offering recommendations for sports organisations on social responsibility and an awareness raising;
- a training toolkit targeted at different levels of sports organisations addressing both non-profit/community (multi)sports clubs and sports academies, professional and semi-professional sports teams, that will include different awareness raising and training activities and resources, in order to build knowledge and skills on implementing good governance principles through social responsibility.
The next partnership meeting will take place in Zagreb Croatia, hosted by IOP in December 2020.
