What are the benefits of refugees’ integration to the labour market? What challenges employers usually face? How to overcome the obstacles and successfully interact with migrants in labour market?

These questions become fundamental if we start to think of refugees, asylum seekers and migrants as of an enormous pool of talents for employers. Indeed, European labour markets lack workforce in different sectors and migrants represent a valuable human capital to fill this gap.

In the first phase of COME IN project, the partnership carried out an extensive transnational research to answer these questions and find out how the integration of refugees into the workplaces can be best supported.

According to the research results, employing refugees, asylum seekers and immigrants brings various benefits and advantages not only for employers and refugee employees but also to the society of the host country. Even though some challenges accompany refugees’ employment, once identified and acknowledged they can be overcome by well-tailored support and training.

Such training should be adapted to the employers’ needs yet being universal enough to ensure high transferability. To meet these requirements, we identified sectors most relevant for the refugees’ employment and focused the further development of the training programme to them. COME IN Training will target especially the needs of employers in tourism and hospitality, healthcare, manual-based work (including handicraft, manufacturing, agriculture or constructions) and cultural mediation.

Project partners discussed the research results at their second meeting in Palermo on 14th and 15th May 2018. From a fruitful debate emerged also a draft of five Modules of COME IN Training Programme focused on general information on refugees’ background, diversity management, on-the-job training programmes and competence assessment.
