In 2014,  the funding line Educazione dei Giovani 2013 of Fondazione CON IL SUD has financed eight projects to face early school leaving and school drop-out in the city of Palermo. Since last spring, the coordinators of the eight partnership networks, who arrived almost at the end of the two years of the project, met to share what has been done, focusing on strategies and processes, strengths and weaknesses.

The cross analysis of these elements has resulted in the development of a reading on the early school leaving that gets out of the logic of the numeric data and percentages, extends his gaze to the socio-economic crisis in the city of Palermo and poses questions to all actors of the educating community. Is it a certainty that the subjects of early school leaving are just the ones linked on the numbers and statistics? How many “missing” are present every day in our classrooms? How many “presences” hide existential discomforts and lack of prospects? How are our teachers?

In this way this idea was born: the idea to organizing an initiative, which is open to the city of Palermo, an opportunity for meetings between representatives of the Institutions, experts of third sector and of the world of school, with the intention to consolidate the need of discussion and dialogue, in order to activate planning and shared strategies to promote school inclusion and face educational emergency of the city.

The conference, entitled “School Plus: from early school leaving to the school inclusion: ideas and proposals”, organized by the associations of the projects “Tutte le Strade Portano a Scuola” and “IN.C.L.A.S.S.E.”, will be realized on Monday, 7th November 2016, at the Diaconal Centre of Palermo “La Noce”, at Via Giovanni Evangelista Di Blasi 12.

In the morning, after the greetings and a presentation of the findings from the network of the eight projects, we will start with the speech of Pasquale D’Andrea, Defender of Children and Adolescents of the city of Palermo, which will be based on the importance of a integrated education project. Subsequently, Christian Elevati, an expert in planning and evaluation of interventions with social impact, will seek to highlight the criticalities of interventions to face early school leaving.

The last speech will be realized by Alida Lo Coco, Professor of Developmental and Educational Psychology at the University of Palermo, who will speak about the importance of the guidance and the consolidation of the relationship school / world of work.

The closure of the morning will be made by Carlo Borgomeo, president of Fondazione CON IL SUD.

In the afternoon three thematic groups will activate and will be facilitated by experts and professors who have worked within the eight projects. The chosen themes are “the role of the actors of the educational community”, “new interpretations of early school leaving in the town of Palermo” and “participatory planning in education.”

The thematic groups, the heart of the day, will be the occasion for meetings between educators, teachers, experts of the third sector, institutional representatives who together will be able to start a confrontation and develop strategic proposals to local Institutions, as a starting point for rethinking together educational interventions to face early school leaving.
