La giornata internazionale del migranteThis day became an important occasion to remember the acceptance of International Convention on the protection of the rights of all migrant workers and members of their families.

Currently, only 47 countries in the world have ratified the Convention; while, Italy and the majority of EU countries do not adhere to this instrument which encodes international human rights of migrant workers. (see United Nations – Treaty Collection).

This United Nations Day has a dual-objective:

  • recognize the contribution of migrants to the development of their country of origin and destination
  • raising public awareness on issues related to migrants and their families.

According to the UN, in 2013, the number of international migrants rose above 232 million individuals; that represents an increase of 50,6 % compared to 1990.

Therefore, the adoption of an international instrument would be desirable to create a system of guarantees for all those people who decide to leave their country to reach another one.
