Italian educators from local associations “Volta la Carta” and “Canto di Los” met educators from Spain, France and Czech Republic, and explored the reality of support structures for people with intellectual disabilities in Prague. This meeting was an important moment to exchange and share good practices with the aim to improve quality of interventions, to offer more autonomy and to give new incentives for patients.
TEDDIP educators were hosted by organization “DSSV” from 27th to 31st of March 2017. “DSSV” is working with adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them employment opportunities and possibilities to live independently inside shelter houses or to attend weekly or year-round centers focused on creative, educational and rehabilitation activities. Differently from Italy, all the services in Czech Republic are financed by the state!
During one week of activities TEDDIP professionals had visited the centers throughout the city center, city suburbs and nearby towns exploring various activities offered to the patients. Educators expressed that it was very interesting to take part in sexual education workshops for disable people as this is not practiced in any other partner country. Sexual education is a controversial subject in this field, but Czech partners are doing it in a natural way and with good results. We can definitely learn from this experience! Furthermore, this mobility was the opportunity to contrast the public system interventions in different countries.
All good practices and experiences on how to integrate minors with an intellectual disability into the community based support structures will be collected and presented in the “White Book” that is one of final products of the TEDDIP’Europe project, co-funded by the Erasmus+ Programme – Key Action 2, Strategic partnerships for Youth.
The next TEDDIP mobility will be implemented in July 2017 and 6 young patients with the educators from Palermo will travel to Perpignan (France) to share experiences with young people from IME “Al Casal” – the educational center for youth with intellectual disabilities.
