Trafficking in human beings is still one of today’s most serious crimes. This 18th of October the EU celebrates its 8th EU Anti Trafficking Day, to raise awareness against this modern day slavery.
In Palermo, the local anti trafficking network and the City council, in cooperation with the NGO CISS and with CESIE, are organizing several events. First and foremost, Isoke Aikpitanyi, a former victim of trafficking in human beings, will be conferred honorary citizenship by the mayor of Palermo. This event will take place on Saturday 18th of October at 10.30 a.m. in Piazza Pretoria. This will then be followed by a demonstration to commemorate all victims of trafficking, especially those who have lost their lives in Italy. At 7 p.m. on the same day, at the NGO “Santa Chiara”, a party will be held with food from Italy and other parts of the world, as well as with video clips on the issue of trafficking. For the full programme of the day and of other events foreseen for the following week, please refer to the programme hereunder.
CESIE has been working to raise awareness against trafficking within the local anti-trafficking network, and through its participation in the ROOT project, funded by the European Commission’s ISEC fund. Within this project, CISS and CESIE are carrying out training workshops for teachers, lawyers, police officers, social workers and students, to help them recognize the phenomenon of trafficking, as well as for empowering former victims of trafficking.
