LISTEN: Telling stories to foster migrants integration

Is it possible to foster the integration of migrant inside local communities through the storytelling?

Storytelling is a useful tool to learn how to communicate, to get to know each other and to express yourself.

On Friday 29th of June 2018 at  Cantieri Culturali alla Zisa (Palermo, Italy), the participants of LISTEN training piloting phase told the stories created during the workshops of storytelling in the framework of the project through non formal activities and storytelling workshops, and the stories they have created.

Ibrahim and Katleen shared their stories in front of the audience with sincerity and emotion.

Some participants of the piloting have received a certificate LEVEL5 of the competences developed during the workshops.

Later then during the evening, there were some performances by a group of unaccompanied minors that are participating in a multicultural programme.

One of the participant, Katleen, wrote her story down and had it drawn by a local artist. The author of the illustration is Adele Musso. She said that she had this story in her for many years and now found the opportunity to tell it to others.

It was a cold Friday, one of those days when the weather makes you feel like an open fridge in front of you.
At 11:19 she was waiting for him. She wore a blue dress like the sea 500 miles from the beach, and her hair was perfect and messy at the same time.
Sitting on a park bench, she thought: today is not the right day for this dress – and meanwhile the skin of the legs was crawling as the coolness passed over her legs.
11:23. He did not arrive. It was useless, she thought. In the end, punctuality is an uncommon virtue not granted to everyone, yes, to those things that are found at the bottom of a yogurt jar as a prize, and that we only appreciate after a long wait. He had never been on time, we already knew, but at least he always crossed the threshold with an acceptable delay. This friday exceeded his record.
11:32. It makes no sense, she thought, while a hair bothered the pupil of her left eye. Time kept running and doing pirouettes in front of her, dragging every second heavily, and he did not appear.
At 11:34 a drop fell on his right shoulder. Water.
11:35. Another drop on his hand, this time more frozen than the last. She had the impression that all the clouds of the sky were coming together forming a circle. At that moment she understood Under the impending downpour, the blue dress like the sea at 500 miles was veiled with sadness, wrapped in the haze of disappointment.
11:45. She left, and for him there was no more story.
