WITH promotes the empowerment of young women and the improvement of professional skills in the tourism and hospitality sector. During the last week of November, the project held its final meeting and conference in Cape Town, South Africa, marking the culmination of its impactful journey.
After two years of work on storytelling and collective healing from trauma, EU-CARES celebrated its results with an event at the European Youth Palermo Centre. With the support of Carlotta Magliocco and her Kamera Photo Lab, final materials, a catalog and an e-Toolkit were presented, engaging participants in an interactive photo walk. The project received both academic and practical appreciation, uniting young people, youth workers and storytelling professionals.
The screening of the docufilm Sh’hili in Palermo stimulated debate on the link between social and climate justice. Filmmaker Habib Ayeb and several local organisations discussed participatory strategies such as agroecology to tackle the climate crisis. The event underlined the urgency of global cooperation for a more sustainable and just future.
Training in storytelling techniques enables youth in the Western Balkans to overcome divisive narratives, address collective trauma and promote reconciliation through dialogue and mutual understanding.
I would photograph double-parked cars, fancy parking lots, crosswalks, broken pipes, dirt, debris, falling buildings and murals. These images, which emerged from EU-CARES’ “Storytelling through Photography” workshop, depict urban conflict on the way from home to work. The Kamera Lab analog photography workshop displayed the participants’ creations, attracting and engaging passersby.
Every day we expose ourselves to dozens or hundreds of photographs, often overlooking their significance. EU-CARES’ “Storytelling through photography” workshop reminded participants of the power of images, invitingolɜ to tell the story of urban conflict with disposable cameras.
Thanks to EU CARES, fifteen participants learned analog photography to explore “urban conflict,” focusing on the experiences of migrant people in Palermo. A vernissage will be held on May 25 at 6:30 pm at Kamera Photo Lab in Vicolo Cefalà!
