The climate crisis is no longer just about future scenarios or scientific data far removed from everyday life: it is already transforming the way we live, where we live, and how we relate to the environment around us. In this context, it is becoming increasingly urgent to rethink the relationship between people, places and resources, by developing educational programmes capable of guiding the younger generations towards greater environmental and social awareness. Schools, education and training can thus become vital spaces for discussion, growth and cultural change.

Through a participatory approach focused on educational innovation, UpSpace promotes the integration of sustainability issues into school settings, providing digital resources and training activities.

Since January, a number of meetings have been organised involving 40 students from two first-year classes and over 30 members of the teaching staff at the IIS ‘Duca Abruzzi-Einaudi-Pareto’ in Palermo, with the aim of launching the pilot phase of two training courses dedicated to the ecological transition and the efficient use of natural resources via the UpSpace e-learning platform.

The platform hosts two separate courses, designed respectively for teaching staff and students, with structured modules, interactive content and practical tools designed to facilitate the integration of environmental issues into educational programmes.

The course for students aged between 12 and 16 comprises online activities and face-to-face sessions, during which topics such as the circular economy, climate change and sustainable resource management are explored in depth. The course emphasises experiential learning through workshops and practical sessions, creating opportunities for discussion and experimentation that help students better understand contemporary environmental challenges.

At the same time, the programme for teaching staff supports professional development and the integration of the ecological transition into educational and teaching activities. The platform provides teaching methodologies, training programmes and digital resources designed to facilitate the delivery of content in the classroom and to promote participatory and interdisciplinary learning approaches.

During the pilot phase, teaching staff had the opportunity to use innovative teaching models, digital teaching tools and educational strategies capable of linking theory and practice. Initial results highlight the programme’s potential to strengthen the role of schools as spaces for active participation and raising awareness of environmental protection issues.

UpSpace helps to promote a more sustainable, innovative and future-skills-oriented education system, supporting the development of informed and active citizens committed to a more sustainable future.
