Do all young people have equal access to cultural experiences?

Unfortunately not! Research shows that young people who are not in employment, education or training who also have fewer opportunities due to social, cultural and economic obstacles are less likely to access cultural experiences, which has the potential to strongly impact on their professional and personal lives.

By providing these young people with the knowledge, skills and opportunities to strengthen their relationship with European cultural heritage and facilitate them knowing and valuing it, it is thus a priority. This would also allow them to contribute actively to its preservation and improvement, whilst also developing their own emotional and social skills, understanding the value of diversity and develop tolerant, open and flexible attitudes.

Based on these points, the 25 by 25 project aims to encourage marginalised young people to increase their interactions with cultural activities and experiences and support them to achieve 25 cultural experiences by the age of 25 years old.

To achieve this goal, seven organisations from the UK, Italy, Bulgaria, Spain, Greece and Hungary working with young people from all over Europe, will cooperate for the next 30 months under the coordination of the English organisation Aspire-Igen Group Limited.

The project partners have already started to conduct research in their respective countries on the techniques used by youth organisations to increase the level of cultural engagement amongst the young people they work with. The results will be summarised in the best Practices Handbook on Cultural Activity Engagement in Europe, which will analyse the state of the art in the engagement of young people.

On completion of the research, the consortium will develop and collate a matrix of cultural activities will be developed within summer 2021, specifically aimed at NEET youths and young people which will include 175 cultural activities from across 7 European countries. In this way the young people will have access to European culture within a range of towns, cities and regions across Europe. Additionally, youth organisations will be able to take inspiration from the matrix about cultural experiences across Europe.

The next step will be for the project consortium to create a framework for the development of a place-based curriculum for students and learners, will be produced around the end of 2022. The framework will allow youth workers and trainers to develop their own place-based curriculum for informal learning through cultural activities. In the final phase of the project all the tools will be incorporated into the 25 by 25 digital platform which will allow users to develop their own learning portfolio based on their cultural experiences. The digital platform also allows youth workers to develop their own place-based curricula which will be hosted on the platform.
