“When we devote attention and resources to the education, health and wellbeing of adolescent girls, they will become an even greater force for positive change in society that will have an impact for generations to come. On this World Population Day, let us pledge to support adolescent girls to realize their potential and contribute to our shared future.“

This is the Message pronounced by Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon for World Population Day on the 11th of July 2013.

“World Population Day” was established by the United Nation Population Fund (UNFPA) in 1989 as a consequence of the “Day of Five Billion people”, marked on the 11th of July 1987. The event is celebrated yearly to raise awareness on global population issues and on the impact they have on development and on the environment, focusing on gender equality, family planning, poverty, maternal health and human rights. The day is celebrated worldwide by institutions, governments, business groups, community and non-profit organizations in many ways. It is promoted by UNFPA which encourages activities and events such as seminar discussions, educational information sessions and essay competitions to help reflect upon the increase in population and see how it can affect the life of individuals.

During the World Population Day 2011, the UN Population Fund launched a campaign aimed to foster public opinion to seize the opportunities and to take up the challenges arising in a world populated by 7 billion people.

CESIE gives its contribution on the matter through some of the projects it is involved in, namely:

  • Replace 2 : the goal of this project is to implement the REPLACE toolkit to foster a behavioural change to end Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) together with other communities in the EU.
  • SUNIA GEEL 2 – Take care of yourself 2 the goal of this project is to provide a framework to reduce violence against women and children issued from marginalised ethnic communities and ensure that their needs for safety and support are met.
  • From School to Community aiming to promote and embrace a democratic society by strengthening democratic citizenship and human rights education via a sustainable multi-actor bottom-up approach.
