On May 18, 2022 the final conference of the Erasmus+ project ouRoute – Citizen-cultural heritage was hosted by the Municipality of Palermo with the collaboration of CESIE and IISS Alessandro Volta of Palermo.
The conference was attended by students of IISS A. Volta, supported by teachers and representatives of culture, in order to start a debate on the promotion of tangible and intangible culture in our territories. During the event, students of the IISS showed their work of rediscovery of the city’s cultural heritage, carried out since 2019 and which involved viticulture experts, carpenters, master papermakers, restorers, cooks, artists, potters, anthropologists, researchers and art historians.
The main products of the project were presented:
- The “Citizen Cultural Heritage Strategy”: document that illustrates the research phases carried out by students in mapping old & new arts & crafts, and with reference to some issues of interest such as: Intangible Heritage Unesco, Mediterranean heritage, puppets theatre, ancient techniques of metal processing, Sicilian popular music, agricultural techniques and viticulture, pottery.
- “Setting off the (re)discovery journey”: students of the Volta presented the toolkit of activities containing ideas on how to organize cultural activities, inspired by good practices already existing at European level and reproduced during 3 workshops held at school in 2021. As part of the WP2, Volta students also participated in two mobilities, the “Citizen Cultural Heritage Weeks” of ouRoute, one held in Palermo and one in Braga.
- The ouRoute online community hub: the ouRoute Hub was presented, an accessible and user-friendly space for young people, where they can upload their video and ethnographic experiences around their local territories. This was followed by a video competition with the awarding of the 3 ouRoute schools (from Portugal, Spain and Italy) and in which the IISS Volta ranked as third winner.
During the conference, representatives of culture and municipal institutions also discussed the new opportunities for involving young people in the promotion of culture, participating in various initiatives in Palermo, and so in order to involve young people in cultural activities, both curricular and extracurricular, and in touch with professionals and stakeholders from the Cultural Heritage in Palermo.
The ouRoute project will end on June 15, after 3-years of work that have allowed three different realities – Municipality, IISS A.Volta and CESIE – to start a fruitful collaboration and allow young people to be sensitive ambassadors and promoters, committed to the promotion of both the city’s and the EU’s cultural heritage(s).
