diggingdeep-local-workshop_bigThe local community event of Digging Deep (DDEEP), an International project co-funded by the European Commission within the framework of Youth in Action programme, took place on Sunday 12th October. It was held during the market of organic fruits organized by CODIFAS (a consortium promoting and defensing the Sicilian agriculture) at the shared urban garden in Palermo.

The DDEEP Italian participants organized different workshops in which a numerous group of people had the opportunity to participate in. Under a sunny weather, feeling of summer rather than autumn, the final local event started with a vertical gardening workshop. By using recycled material (such as plastic bottles), people learned how to cultivate some plants even if they don’t have enough space at home.

Then, the DDEEP youth educators did a tour to the children through the local urban garden, the place where the main local activities of the project took place in the last months. Taking with them some little hand forks and trowels, the group of little boys and girls learned how to distinguish some vegetables and how those have been planted and how to take care of them. At the end of the workshop, they were rewarded with a little lettuce that they will make it grown and need to take care of at home.

Across the several stands of the market, people could buy organic products coming from all the territory of Sicily. It was also the opportunity for a local association, OltreVerde, to make a workshop on ceramics. Meanwhile, DDEEP youth organized a tasting workshop, making comparison between organic and not organic fruits, inviting people to fill in an evaluation questionnaire.

To conclude the event, after the presentation of the project, it was offered a barbecue. All in the name of healthy food!

…What else now?

The project is about to reach its last step: a final meeting in Accra (Ghana) will take place from 19th to 24th of October. Local Working Group members, coming from the four partner countries (China, Ghana, Italy and Slovenia) will meet together to share all local activities carried out and visit the Ghanaian urban garden. Moreover they will organize the Harvest Festival, that will be on Wednesday 22th October in the Ghanaian capital. Two key facts will be shown in this public event: the Digging Deep handbook launch (that has been designed by illustrators from each of the local working groups) and some workshops on horticulture in which people will be involved.

If you would like to discover all activities that have been already performed, and those to come in Ghana, you can visit the website: www.diggingdeep.eu or the Digging Deep Facebook page.
