How can we help teachers improve their assessment skills and allow their students to achieve better performances? Can digital tools have a significant role in such processes?
The AROSE partners believe digital tools can be a powerful ally in creating new assessment models. For this reason, they have teamed up with teachers from partner schools to design a platform that could contribute to smooth the assessment procedure of students’ listening and speaking skills in the English language.
The AROSE platform is one of the main outputs of the project, and it features the following sections:
- A registration form. Before accessing the platform, teachers must fill in a registration form by simply digiting their name, email address and password. After submitting the form, they will be automatically redirected to the dashboard.
- A dashboard. It allows access to all the other sections, such as the repository of OERs, the students’ profiles, the rubrics, the gradebook, and its configuration tool.
- Resources. In this section, it is possible to look for relevant resources organised by name, topic, and level. Teachers can also upload their favourite activities that will be added to the repository of OERs, providing a description.
- My students. In this section, teachers can record the profiles of the students they wish to evaluate according to the criteria they have set and monitor their progress. It is possible to add single students or to import bulk data concerning whole classes.
- Rubrics. This section contains the rubrics elaborated during the project to be used in assessment procedures. Moreover, it allows teachers to create, upload and save their own assessment grids, adding relevant criteria, descriptors, and performance levels.
- Gradebook. This tool allows teachers to rate their students’ work against their criteria. Therefore, before using the gradebook, it is necessary to compile or choose the rubric for assessing students.
- Chat and forum. Teachers can count on a chat and a forum, allowing for synchronous and asynchronous communication among users. The forum is organised by topic, and users can join or leave different conversations as they please.
As we can see, the AROSE platform contains all the tools English teachers might need to assess their students. For this reason, we suggest they incorporate it into their teaching routines to facilitate and standardise this procedure within secondary schools. To familiarise oneself with the platform, we recommend exploring its resources and trying some of the activities proposed in class. We invite English teachers to look at the AROSE platform and discover its potential to enhance the assessment of students’ oral skills.
