ONE BILLION RISINGCESIE invites you all to take part in the global initiative ONE BILLION RISING for JUSTICE, that will also take place in Palermo this Friday the 14th of February at 5 p.m. in piazza Vittorio Emanuele Orlando (in front of Palermo’s courthouse).

The event will consist in a flash mob on the notes of “break the chain” and a reading of excerpts from the Istanbul Convention to say no to violence against women. The event is promoted by the “Coordinamento Antiviolenza 21 luglio” and will be supported by various networks and NGOs, such as the “Favour and Loveth Anti trafficking Network of Palermo” – of which CESIE is a member.

This year’s One billion rising campaign aims at claiming justice for women in all those outside places where they are entitled to justice – courthouses, police stations, government offices, school administration buildings, work places, sites of environmental injustice, military courts, embassies, places of worship, homes, or simply public gathering places where women deserve to feel safe but too often do not.

Through its projects, CESIE is carrying out several initiatives aimed at combating violence against women. Here are a few of them:

Sunia Geel 2  – Take care of yourself.

The Project provides an increased understanding of the needs of service users, thus creating the possibility of an improved response. It is critical that women are empowered to make informed and safe choices for themselves and their children. The incidence of domestic violence and intra-family violence will be reduced by promoting a zero tolerance approach within marginalized communities and amongst those delivering social services to ethnic minorities.

ROOT  – The involvement of Organized Criminal Groups in the Trafficking of Women for Sexual Exploitation: the case study of Palermo

Strictly linked with violence against women is the issue of trafficking in human beings (THB). Sadly, in Italy we can find more than a quarter of the total of identified or presumed victims of THB in the EU, most of them being women that are exploited for sexual purposes.  CESIE is now contributing to fight this phenomenon starting from Palermo through its participation in the “ROOT” project – which aims at raising awareness amongst people on trafficking for sexual purposes, as well as at developing a transnational cooperation network with the countries of origin of trafficking (such as Nigeria).

Replace 2 – A new approach to end FGM

The project is designed to end the practice of FGM by continuing with the research and the actions developed in the first Replace project that has resulted in the “Pilot Toolkit for Replacing Approaches to Ending FGM in the EU: Implementing Behaviour Change with Practising Communities”. Replace 2 is being implemented through a community based participatory approach with FGM affected communities of the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Italy, Spain and Portugal. Research-action through focus groups, interviews and interventions at community level has the aim to contribute to a behaviour change towards the FGM practice. As a result of the experience in different countries and with different FGM practising communities, the partnership will enrich the final version of the Toolkit that can become a self-sustaining tool to be used across the EU.
