The activities of “From School to Community” started in Ankara, Turkey, where the kick-off meeting for the project was held on the 3rd and the 4th of September, 2013.
The partnership at work on the project includes the non-profit EURICON (Coordinator, from the Netherlands), the Middle East Technical University of Ankara (Turkey), and CESIE (Italy).
“From School to Community” is a EuropeAid project co-financed by the European Union and the Republic of Turkey, and it aims at promoting awareness of democratic citizenship and human rights in the Ankara region. The main purpose of the activities will be to actively involve students in their community thanks to a bottom-up approach adopted to provide education on the values of democracy, active citizenship and respect for human rights. The project will engage not only middle-school students from the Ankara region, but also their teachers, parents, school administrations, as well as the wider society.
The project foresees the implementation of specific training on democratic citizenship and human rights education, tailored for teachers and students in middle school. In order to guarantee that the training sessions are suitable for the young people and their teachers, a review of state-of-the-art education on human rights and democratic citizenship will be led by CESIE, and a needs assessment analysis will be carried out primarily by METU (Turkey). Following the completion of the training, teachers and students will be able to have a direct impact on their community by designing proposals for action in their society to promote human rights and democracy. School will hence be the cradle of innovative and participatory activities to be carried out in the community, thus allowing the students and the teachers to become engaged promoters of the European values.
The training materials developed for Turkish teachers will be made available on the project website (coming up soon), so as to assure a wider impact, also on countries other than Turkey.
