What does it mean today to build a more united and inclusive Europe from the grassroots up?
The European Solidarity Corps (ESC) Programme is the European Union’s instrument that allows young people aged between 18 and 30 to tackle social and humanitarian challenges. Through volunteering, participants promote active citizenship and inclusion, transforming European values into concrete actions within the local community.

Thanks to a new project under the programme, we have just welcomed six volunteers to Palermo, who will participate in 10 months of individual volunteering activities at various host organisations.
The project will be carried out in collaboration with sending organisations from different countries and two host organisations, Centro Astalli Palermo Onlus and Associazione Ubuntu, both of which have extensive experience in working with vulnerable groups and promoting social inclusion.le presso organizzazioni ospitanti.

During these months in Palermo, the group of volunteers will support the planning and implementation of educational and training activities aimed primarily at local children and young people, or those with a migrant background, living in situations of social fragility. The activities will follow non-formal education methods: workshops, training sessions, seminars, personal activities, and experiential learning through play.

The young volunteers will be involved in crucial local issues: social challenges, citizenship, democratic participation, and environmental sustainability. Furthermore, they will actively participate in the preparation and development of pathways focusing on arts and culture, sustainable mobility, youth entrepreneurship, and human rights, ensuring that every intervention responds to the real needs of the local community and involves people with disabilities and NEETs (those not in education, employment, or training).

The European Solidarity Corps continues to play a key role in bringing together young people from different countries to promote social inclusion, solidarity, and active citizenship in Palermo. Through volunteering activities based on non-formal education, participants have the opportunity to engage directly with local communities, support the daily activities of host organisations, and develop both personal and professional skills.

About the European Solidarity Corps Programme

The European Solidarity Corps programme offers young people from within the programme countries the opportunity to contribute to tackling social and humanitarian challenges through volunteering or by setting up their own solidarity projects. The programme is in line with European Union priorities, promoting inclusion, green practices, and digital skills, while fostering the active participation of young people aged 18 to 30. Activities include individual and group volunteering projects in high-priority areas, solidarity projects, and quality labels for solidarity volunteering activities, as well as quality labels for volunteering in the humanitarian aid sector.

The project is funded by the European Solidarity Corps programme and the Italian National Agency for Youth (Agenzia Italiana per la Gioventù).
