First Aid Services in European countries project took place in Palermo, from April 28th to May 18th 2014. This project aims at promoting a transfer of knowledge/experience concerning First Aid in Europe service, within the framework of Leonardo Da Vinci Mobility IVT – Lifelong Learning Programme.
Participants come from Kırşehir, a city near Ankara (Turkey), they are students at “Kaman Anadolu Saglik Meslek Lisesi”, a medical professional institute offering special trainings for radiologists, nurses, medical technologists, ophthalmic opticians and dental technicians.
During this three-week-programme, students tested themselves in many practical activities, held presentations about existing differences between Italian and Turkish Health Care System and participated in numerous visits, in order to understand better the Italian Health Care System.
Students were led by Dr. Hopps while exploring First Aid Emergency Room at Ospedale Civico, besides their programme of activities featured also visits at ISMETT (Mediterranean Institute for Transplantation), at Radiology Department and its museum in Palermo University Hospital, at AIRC laboratories directed by Dr. Giorgio Stassi, at Emergency Surgery Department, at Intensive Care Unit and at Blood Transfusion Centre.

Turkish students have had the chance to analyse similarities and differences in their training process. For instance, visiting IPSIA E. Ascione (a medical professional school) and the Faculty of Nursing Sciences allowed them to discuss with Italian students and teachers about these issues. In particular, students were curious about the length of studies, university admission procedures, relevant skills and job opportunities in this field. Moreover, they participated in World Nurse Day, held in Piazza Politeama on May 12th.This event helped them socializing with the local students, who involved them in a filming initiative promoted by the nurses, working in Palermo, so they acted in a short video, featuring the famous “Happy” song.
Before leaving, students attended a
First Aid training course with practice exercises carried on by Prof. Giammarinaro and received their completion certificates.
