Today, 28th of January, is the Data Protection Day. This date was chosen in order to celebrate the anniversary of the opening for signature of the Council of Europe’s Convention 108 on the 28th of January 1981. Since 2007, every year the European countries, United States and Canada celebrate this day, also called Data Privacy Day.

According to the Italian protection data Authority, “personal data are a piece of information that identifies or allows identifying a natural person and provides details about that person’s features, habits, lifestyle, personal relationships, health, financial status, and so on.”

The purpose of the Data Protection Day is to raise awareness among European citizens about the importance of the protection of personal data and respect of fundamental rights and freedoms, in particular their privacy. In everyday life, much personal information is stored in files, disclosed to third parties, reconciled with other data or used in different ways, and the effects of this trend were multiplied by the spreading of new technologies.

To celebrate this Day, several events will be held all over Europe to raise awareness on data protection and inform citizens of their rights and of good practices.

CESIE fully acknowledges the importance of data protection, which is an issue relevant to most of the projects we are involved in, particularly those related to the use of ICT and to the access to web-based materials. Here are some of our projects dealing in a direct or indirect way with data protection and safeguard of personal privacy:

  • POLYGLOT – Multilingual education in pre-school age, aims to help educators and parents learn how to fully exploit the potential of web-based Open Educational Resources (OER) in pre-school bilingual education. The guidelines and e-courses envisaged within the project will also include a specific section related to how to guarantee the security of children and the safeguard of their personal data when accessing web-based resources.
  • VSAV – Virtual Stages Against Violence contributed to the reduction of media violence on children and young people, raising awareness among children, young people and parents of the risks related to the use of media.
  • EAN – European Antibullying Network aimed at combating bullying and cyber-bullying through the establishment of a European Antibullying Network and an awareness-raising campaign.
  • STIR Safeguarding Teenage Intimate Relationships aims to document the incidence, impact and dynamics of online and offline experiences of partner violence and views on prevention, and to develop an appropriate directly accessible web-based resource and app for young people.
