2020 has globally redefined our common lives as we have been forced to reconceive them both in terms of time and space, leading us to a profound reflection on the social changes which will follow. Windows have become our real and metaphorical vantage points from which we observe our world and the new scenarios awaiting our local and global communities.
As crisis exacerbates inequalities, new perspectives on dialogue and cooperation are emerging just when they seem more necessary than ever. We have learnt to observe the world from a distance, while we also got closer to ourselves by practicing a mindful introspection. Living-without-others allows us to reflect on the sense of our community and challenges us to keep building and finding new identities and meanings.
Which idea of community are you picturing out of your window?
In order to answer and meditate upon such question 207 artworks have been submitted to the second edition of Art and Act (Marie Marzloff Award), an art contest organised by CESIE.
These ideas of community came from 27 different countries sharing diverse perspectives on the reality we are living in and confirming – once again – the role of art as a universal means of communication and intercultural dialogue.
Please find below the list of the winning artworks:
- 1st PRIZE: Sea foam#Bloom, AYUNA (South Korea)
- 2nd PRIZE: incontro-luce, Carmelo Airi and Irene Fortuna (Italy)
- 3rd PRIZE: Delimited rooms, Antonella Zito (Italy/The Netherlands)
- YOUTH AWARD: The Story of a Pandemic Journey, Miriam Carroccetto (Italy)
Among the distinctive elements of this contest, it is worth to mention a certain willingness to create solidary ties and communities. The impossibility of setting up a traditional exhibition turned out to be an opportunity to build new relationships. We would like to thank all the business owners who decided to participate and give their consent so as to organise a diffuse exhibition in the display windows of their shops and restaurants located in Palermo city centre.
You are kindly invited to follow the map and look around from December 20th until January 31st 2021.
Along with the winning artworks, the exhibition will feature a copy of the artistic works signed by the shortlisted artists: Qipeng Deng (China), JangGuin Lim (South Korea), Sandra Miranda Pattin (Colombia), Martin Weinberg (USA), Vanna Veglia (Italy), Kenzie Lindow (USA).
