A Piece of Diversity
2012: Tenth Anniversary of the World Day for Cultural Diversity

‘At bottom every man knows well enough that he is a unique being, only once on this earth; and by no extraordinary chance will such a marvellously picturesque piece of diversity in unity as he is, ever be put together a second time.’
This is an inspiring quotation by Friedrich Nietzsche on the topic of diversity which we use here in order to remind you and focus your attention to the significance of today’s celebration – The World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development launched by UNESCO and the UN Alliance of Civilizations. It is a day that provides us with the opportunity and the challenge to deepen our understanding of the values of cultural diversity and to learn to live together better.
A brief info:
In 2001, UNESCO adopted the Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity and in December 2002, the UN General Assembly, declared May 21 to be the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development.
The 2012 campaign, by encouraging people and organizations from around the world to take concrete action to support diversity, aims:
- To raise awareness worldwide about the importance of intercultural dialogue, diversity and inclusion.
- To build a world community of individuals committed to support diversity with real and every day-life gestures.
- To combat polarization and stereotypes to improve understanding and cooperation among people from different cultures.

CESIE is strongly committed to the topic of cultural diversity in its projects by bringing together the resources and talents of many people for the shared benefit of all. It has a 10-year dedication to the idea of the promotion of active involvement of people, increasing the value of diversity and celebrating diversity by promoting the individual heritages and beliefs. We strongly believe that by making more efforts to understand another’s values, lifestyle, or cultural differences, it will make us live an easier and funnier life.
Experiencing cultural diversity in daily situations has sometimes been funny, other times, embarrassing, and even downright offensive – not on purpose – but simply because we didn’t understand the culture of others. Highlighting our differences may be deeply revealing in the sense that they may provide a fundamental understanding of responsibility in human communities around the world. So, we challenge you to take advantage of this day and broaden your view on cultural diversity. Make an effort to get to know your neighbour. Have dinner with a family that is different than your own. Encourage your child to make friends with other children. Experience and enjoy cultural diversity.
