Biodiversity is at the heart of an increasingly evident crisis. Global population growth and economic development are intensifying pressure on land-use systems, contributing to the progressive degradation of ecosystems. In Europe, around 80% of natural habitats are in a critical condition, highlighting the urgent need for concrete action.
Restoring biodiversity is not merely about protecting nature; it is closely linked to human well-being and quality of life. In this context, restoring ecosystems and promoting practices that respect both the climate and biodiversity require a concrete commitment from society.
In response to these challenges, Co-Bio promotes solutions based on biodiversity and sustainable practices, focusing on co-creation as active collaboration, to develop shared responses tailored to local contexts.
The activities are carried out by engaging local communities through workshops, pilot projects and case studies. A key element is the development of tools and methodologies designed to strengthen skills and capacity for action, thereby facilitating the design and implementation of solutions for urban biodiversity.
In this context, we at CESIE ETS have contributed to the development of the Biodiversity Garden at the Euromadonie site in Roccella (Palermo), a space that combines environmental sustainability, education and participation. The Biodiversity Garden is designed as a living laboratory dedicated to the enhancement of native flora, the promotion of ecological awareness and the strengthening of the bond between people and the environment.
The local community has been actively involved through planting days, workshops and storytelling sessions, contributing to the care and development of the local area.
Among the initiatives undertaken:
- the protection and promotion of endemic and rare plant species native to Sicily;
- the integration of biodiversity into the daily life of the local community through interactive learning experiences;
- the promotion of a multifunctional space dedicated to education, research and recreational activities.
Co-Bio thus stands as a collective initiative that demonstrates how urban biodiversity can serve as a catalyst for participation, awareness and the sustainable transformation of local areas.
