Long-term unemployment (LTU) is currently one of the most common social issues across several European states, with Italy being one of the European countries facing the highest unemployment rates.
The situation gets even worse when the focus goes to women facing difficult situations, whose barrier to access the job market can get unsurmountable. It is exactly to address these issues that AWARE project was created.
AWARE aims at supporting women facing barriers to the job market by cutting the distance with employers of the agri-food sector. 80 women in total across 4 countries will be selected in cooperation with local employment centres in order to partake a path for their re-employment. In a first phase, NGOs partners will develop, in cooperation with enterprises partners, a training course that fully reflects the necessary skills for working in the agri-food sector. Later, the 80 women selected will directly take part to the training, in preparation for the most important phase of AWARE project: a 6 months-long contract within the selected enterprises.
This initiative has a two-fold purpose: on the one hand, it is to connect agri-food sector employers with long-term unemployed women, aiming to secure them a stable job that extends beyond the project’s timeframe. On the other hand, and as a priority, it is to provide comprehensive preparation that strengthens both their self-esteem and their employability, equipping them with the cross-cutting and technical skills specific to the agri-food sector.
The project has just begun, and preparations have already started among us as partners. Moreover, we participated in the first Mutual Learning Event in Nantes, organized as part of the ESF+ Social Innovation+ Initiative. The event has been an unprecedented occasion to speak with other coordinators of projects facing long-term unemployed people, trying to find common solutions to similar issues, and most importantly learning from the best practices against LTU that have been put in practice in France.
