EcuadorBetween August 7th to 18th took place the job-shadowing in India developed by Angela Martinez of CESIE within the project “Tools for Equal Sustainable Development (TESD)”. The host association “Jeevvanrekha Parishad (JRP)” has organized a full program of activities and visits for the guest, who had the opportunity to know the reality of the city of Bhubaneswar (capital of the Indian state of Orissa, east of country) and its surroundings. The visits were focused on local sustainable development projects that JRP implements with other NGOs operating in the area, both with other national and local governments and with the support of international programs like this one funded by the European Commission (Youth in Action). JRP works involving communities and disadvantaged people, such as “untouchables” (the lowest caste in India), socially marginalized tribes, working children, women without resources, the disabled, drug addicts, etc.., Giving them the opportunity to grow and develop through educational projects, educational, social reinsertion, development of their work activities, etc. As an example, Angela Martinez had the opportunity to develop non-formal education activities on human rights with children former workers, and also to visit a tribe where women are growing a colony of bees whose honey is sold in the local markets, so that they may have the resources to develop future activities.

During the job-shadowing was also celebrated the International Youth Day, organized by the JRP, in which they have developed lectures and artistic-cultural event. The participants had the opportunity to speak to young people, students, representatives of youth organizations and politicians invited, about the best practices developed in Palermo by CESIE, related with the topic of the project “TESD”: women and sustainable development . In this framework, Angela Martinez presented the work done with the project “Inventing the future in Ballarò” (funded by the Foundation for the South “) and a research on women’s role in Italian society.

Within the same project was held the second Job Shadowing, involving another member of CESIE, Alessandro Melillo.

In this case, the JS was held in Ecuador, and Alessandro Melillo was hosted by TESD project partner organization, Programa Muchacho Trabajadores (PMT), an organization of the Central Bank of Ecuador.

The activities of this JS focused on showing good practices on sustainable development identified by the Ecuadorian partners. In this framework have been visited several local communities that pay attention to sustainable development in general and especially on environmental issues. The first visit took place in Tena, a town on the outskirts of the Ecuadorian Amazon rainforest, where it was possible to get in contact with indigenous communities still living according with the natural environment ,and organizing their social dynamics in accordance to those natural rhythms. In Tena took place a workshop, under the provided activities of TESD’s Job Shadowing, led by Alessandro Melillo and representatives of PMT, on the topic of sustainable development with local youngsters.

Alessandro then moved on to visit the farming community of Rio Cana, that organized the annual festival of the recovery of traditions and local products. In this framework, the TESD project team shared ideas and information with the participants and the organizers of that festival, participating in discussions and activities, being aware of the situation of agriculture in Ecuador and on how the local farming communities are fighting for maintain the natural environment around them, preserving agricultural products and animals from pollution and degradation.

At the end of the JS period was held a debate, at the Aula Magna of the Central Bank of Ecuador in Quito. Alessandro Melillo explained the features of TESD project, speaking about sustainable development and its state in Italy, especially regarding the issue of gender equality, showing the result of the research carried out by CESIE
