Young people are the main actors in social change. They are an important resource and the society must provide them with as many opportunities as possible to let them fully express their potential. How can their full participation be promoted? First of all, in order to foster their ability to contribute to their local community, it is essential to start from their well-being.

The first training course on Positive Youth Development ended last month and had as protagonists young volunteers interested in experimenting with new approaches and methodologies to be applied in the field of volunteering, but especially in their daily lives.

The training course (held both in presence and online between December 2021 and January 2022) has thus made possible a discussion between the young people engaged in voluntary activities and has been an important opportunity to discuss together the aspects that allow the promotion of the positive development of the young beneficiaries of their efforts in favour of the collectivity, and to conduct a conscious reflection on the ways to promote their well-being as young people.

Specifically, the participants of the course promoted by the PAClife project, learned the basic principles of the approach known as Positive Youth Development and, through the use of practical, physical and interactive activities, have analysed the model of application of this approach, known as the “Model of the 5 C“: “competence, confidence, social connection, character & caring“, whose full development allows to develop the sixth and last “C”: the ability to contribute to the community.

The volunteers actively participated in the definition of the main concepts and in the identification of some good practices from which to draw inspiration in the performance of their voluntary activities, as well as in their daily lives in contact with their peers or children. In addition, the sharing of their personal experience has enriched the reflection on each of the 5 competences and on the usefulness of consciously organizing such knowledge to make it easily accessible when needed.
