Social impact measurement provides unique benefits and advantages to social change practitioners, whether non-profit or private sector professionals, as it touches all areas of organizational management, from resource allocation and strategy to service delivery, coordination, advocacy, and fundraising.

Yet, many stakeholders involved in these procedures would like to get a clearer idea of who they are measuring for – are they doing it for government stakeholders? For donors? For the organization itself? For beneficiaries? The general public?  Some wonder whether there are some kinds of external validation, that might help to dispel confusion around irregularities in the ways impact measurement is carried out.

Considering the centrality of social impact measurement and willing to contribute to the promotion of a common framework of knowledge and competences, SIM4CSOs partners conducted an analysis to learn more about social impact measurement and good practices existing in their countries: Croatia, Italy, Cyprus, Norway, Israel, Portugal, Poland and Greece.

The Comprehensive guide on social impact measurement deriving from this analysis was created through:

  • A desk research identifying 31 best practices;
  • An online questionnaire translated in project partners’ languages, sent to minimum 30 organisations in each country;
  • A series of focus groups primarily targeting Third Sector actors.

Interviewees and focus groups participants shared their opinions, which will be fundamental for the next steps of the projects, firstly the development of a detailed Methodological Manual about the key knowledge and competences necessary to strengthen the efficacy of CSOs and to measure their activities impact.

The comprehensive guide on social impact measurement is available online: cesie.org/en/resources/sim4csos-comprehensive-guide-social-impact-measurement/

In the following months, CESIE will organise an Info Day to promote the methodological manual and provide an overview of the competences and knowledge needed for a more efficient social impact measurement.
