How to raise the youngster awareness on gender issues and on the differences between men and women in their respective countries of origin and in the society of Palermo?

The training on the new masculinities was divided into 4 meetings, held from 21 to 30 November, lasting three hours each. It was attended by ten boys from different countries, such as Senegal, Ivory Coast, Mali, Gambia and Italy.

In the first meeting the project was presented to the students selected for the training. Subsequently, the implementation of the activities began with some games to get to know each other and to ease the initial embarrassment. After this first playful moment, the topics of man and woman, interculturality, stereotypes and gender were introduced. From the very outset, cultural differences emerged and were discussed in plenary and then developed by further non-formal individual and group activities.

In the second and third sessions, various aspects of the themes introduced in the previous meeting were discussed, starting from the notion of couple, love, responsibility, respect and ultimately feeling safe. In addition, through an analysis of a rap song video and its lyrics, topics like possession, violence, sex and how to approach women were highlighted.

Although initially timid and reluctant to open up, the participants gradually showed great interest, by actively participating and contributing in a lively and dynamic way to the development of the topics dealt with, aware that the activity was aimed at improving their understanding of how to fit into a culturally different context.

Being able to discuss these issues has certainly provided the participants with a safe space for sharing in which both they and the trainers have managed to generate dynamics of exchange and therefore an opportunity for enrichment that has given rise to a constructive dialogue on the issues covered.

Everyone attended the course until the end, thereby receiving a certificate of participation which is an important step along the learning path. Indeed, this training allows the participants to become trainer of other guys on gender and interculturality.
