Healthy living, healthy lifestyles and information about and confidence in the use of the host country’s health system are prerequisites for the integration of refugees and newly arrived migrants into European host societies.

More than 50 people from different countries and backgrounds attended the final conference in Athens on 10 October 2019.  Their background ranged from health professionals and trainers to health project developers.  In addition to presenting the main results and lessons learned in terms of implementing health promotion education units, there was space for discussions, exchanges, workshops and networking, so that all participants were active in the conference processes. The question of whether health literacy is a key to integration was repeatedly addressed and not least discussed at a round table.

This question was also a recurring theme in the debate on the fact that health is essential for successful access to care and for the maintenance of health and well-being. In this sense, VIM materials can help inform migrants and refugees about a healthy lifestyle in general and about the health system of the country in which they live, so that they can also learn to communicate more effectively with health system representatives and understand that the perception of what health/disease means culturally.

With this, the project aims to increase the European integration of migrants. Healthy living, healthy lifestyles and information about their use of health are prerequisites for scholarships in European host societies.
