Storytelling is a useful tool to learn how to communicate, keep in touch with the others and express our own inwardness.
What if the storytelling is used as educational method favoring migrants integration inside local communities?
Thank you to everyone who contributed in our research, we received 208 answers from 13 countries to LISTEN survey.
The survey has been launched last May to understand how trainers and facilitators feel about storytelling and the idea to connect it with radio broadcasting to give refugees a voice in their new communities.
The results
Among all the impressions, here are the main conclusions:
- the storytelling approach is well known;
- many have experiences with storytelling from teacher’s/ trainer’s perspective;
- see positive effects of using storytelling in their work with migrants/ refugees;
- are open to use storytelling and radio broadcasting in their work .
Nevertheless, the respondents found out that therefore:
- they need more competences in: storytelling, intercultural communication/ awareness, media competences and technical expertise
- challenges to do radio are seen in: their learners’ language skills, radio station access, and lack of technical skills as well as conceptionalization of radio programmes.
The Training Course
Based on the above results, the partners have met on 7th and 8th September 2017 in Athens (Greece), and worked on the development of the training modules that will be implemented during the Training Course hosted by Verein Multikulturell in Innsbruck (Austria) from 22nd to 26th January 2018.
The training modules will be available in a Guideline for trainers and multipliers that want to apply the LISTEN approach to use storytelling as a tool for enhancing and validating competences among refugees.

LISTEN – Learning Intercultural Storytelling is two year project co-funded by the Erasmus+ Programme, Key Action 2 – Strategic Partnerships in the field of Adult education.
The LISTEN project aims at introducing storytelling approaches and techniques to a radio environment as a binding factor which brings social and personal benefits for refugees.
