According to European Council and the Council of the EU, there are 20 million non-EU nationals living in Europe – 4% of the EU’s total population. The relocation and resettlement measures adopted in response to the refugee and migrant crisis have emphasised the need to support member states with less experience with integration.

This includes the need to develop approaches and tools that can support schools in managing students coming from third countries and their interaction with native students creating intercultural environments.

IntegratEd wants to develop a holistic approach:

  • to support teachers, school heads and not teaching school staff in their daily job with the students to contrast early school leaving and repudiate discrimination;
  • to create an educational community helping the students to improve their scholastic performances and become main actor of their educational path and social inclusion;
  • to favor experiences and good practices exchange in the field of scholastic education and inclusion of students coming from third countries;
  • to promote the development of a comprehensive model of educational support;
  • to sensitize on the role of the education in promoting an inclusive society.

Teachers and school staff will gain and develop knowledge and skills on how to foster the inclusion of newly arrived TCN students and to support them in their educational process. This support model will involve the whole school community: teachers, school leaders, school staff; students, both migrants and natives; parents and families; local community.

We would support schools in managing multicultural environments through:

  • Mentoring Programme for high school TCN students by older students with a migrant background to support them in the educational path as well as the school in managing cultural differences;
  • training Activities for teachers and school staff on intercultural competences and management of intercultural environments;
  • activities to foster parents’ involvement, in particular the ones of TCN students, in their children educational process;
  • an Education Support Platform that will allow students, in particular TCNs, to be supported also outside the school context.

On the 20th and 21st February, representatives from the 6 partner organisations met in Athens (Greece) to get to know each other and discuss the first steps of the project. We shared the first results of a research on the state of art of the school support system for newly arrived TCN students in secondary education in Belgium, Greece, Italy, Spain and United Kingdom.
