After graduating high-school in June of 2023, I had no idea what I wanted to do next. When I found out about the opportunity to volunteer with ESC, I thought that it would be the perfect opportunity for me to take some time to figure out what I want while also getting the opportunity to meet and work with different people, explore a new part of the world, and try to learn a new language. Getting accepted for a nine month volunteering project in Palermo was a dream come true.
During my time in this incredible city I had the chance to volunteer in three different local centres. In Cicloficina Perez I got to meet people who were passionate about making their city a more sustainable place through upcycling old bikes and fighting for the chance to introduce new bike paths. I also got to volunteer in Progetto Itaca, where I met such amazing people. This centre provided people with mental disabilities opportunities to socialise and learn new skills such as gardening and computer competences. Although at times it was hard to see the impact I had through helping with cleaning and cooking, the people there never hesitated to tell me how much I was appreciated. Lastly, I volunteered in Ubuntu, a kindergarten for children of migrants. The work was hard, but rewarding, as we could see the children grow up and learn during the time we were there.
Apart from the volunteering aspect, this project gave me the space to grow as a person. I discovered new hobbies, improved my communication, and became more confident.
Of course, like with any new experience, there were challenging moments, but I always had the support of the other volunteers, and our wonderful mentor and tutor. This experience taught me lessons I will keep with me for the rest of my life and I am forever grateful that I got to spend these nine months in Palermo!
