Recruitment, hiring and on-boarding of new employees require a comprehensive set of professional and personal competencies. To guarantee equal work opportunities for all within these processes, employers need practical tools to support labour inclusion of candidates and employees from diverse cultural backgrounds.
REST project offers such a tool in the form of a comprehensive training programme dedicated to employers who wish to enhance their competencies when it comes to employing and interacting with refugees and migrants.
The programme was developed to meet the employers’ training needs and preferences considering the benefits of employing refugees for enterprises.
Thanks to the REST training, employers will improve their knowledge about:
- legal and administrative aspects of refugees’ and migrants’ employment including internship programmes;
- new strategies to support newcomers’ integration at the workplace;
- methods enhancing human resources management and supporting positive dynamics within international work teams.
The REST training focusing on six topics identified by the European research will be delivered in May and June 2018:
- Legal and administrative issues, 7 May
- Recruitment and selection, 24 May
- Induction and on-boarding, 24 May
- Mentoring, 12 June
- Intercultural aspects, 19 June
- Communication in national language, 22 June

1. Legal and administrative issues
Firstly, REST offers to employers training on legal measures regulating refugees’ employment and related administrative procedures. This training will be organised in a form of round table discussion with expert on Italian labour law and legislation concerning refugees and asylum-seeker.
2. Recruitment and selection
The second training module is dedicated to identification, recruitment and selection of employees or trainees from refugees. Here the learners will be introduced to the specifics of refugees’ recruitment and will be guided through the process of searching, screening and interviewing.
3. Induction and on-boarding
Following the chronological framework, the third module is focused on induction and on-boarding process. This module will help employers with refugees’ integration in the company culture and managing and motivating their employees with different cultural background.
4. Mentoring
The forth module deals with mentoring which is considered an important and useful approach in refugees’ integration to workplace. This module explains what mentoring is, what mentor does and does not, what mentorship relationship is and how to manage it taking into account specific challenges when mentoring refugees. Furthermore, the module includes a toolbox of elements of successful mentorship and recommendations for appraisal interviews.
5. Intercultural aspects
The intercultural aspects of refugees’ integration are treated in the fifth module. It starts with intercultural awareness and communication continuing with topics such as diversity management including different religions and traditions at workplace.
6. Communication in national language
Finally, REST offers a unique tool to “easy language” which teaches how to use one’s own mother tongue in a way that it is clear and easily understandable for somebody whose skill in this language is only intermediate. This training material explains how the use of language affects understanding, which words are easy to understand, how to avoid difficult synonyms and formulate the message properly.

- Key staff in enterprises such as HR managers, supervisors and in-house trainers;
The modules Intercultural aspects and Communication in national language are open to the all staff members in order to boost the dynamics and team work at the workplace.
