How it is possible to favor new entrepreneurial initiatives and support the migrant women inclusion into the workforce?

Tuesday 3 July, the final event of the ARISE project was held in Palermo. The event wanted to present the entrepreneurial path of migrant and refugee women who took part to the project.

A group of 14 women living in Palermo, from Senegal, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Kenya and Chile, participated in the training course (from January to July 2018) and developed their self-employment skills and their knowledge on issues concerning the market, the service offer, business organization.

What brought them together was the shared passion and will to open a business in Palermo. A business coach has been helping them acquire all the tools to create a business model canvas, a sustainable business plan and the means to conduct the feasibility study and assessments prior their debut in the business market of Palermo.

From the experience of ARISE women, a social enterprise, AFRITA, will born with the main aim to unite Italian and African cultures.
AFRITA will be divided into 3 operative units:

  • TOURISM unit that will provide assistance services for tourists who want to visit Africa or Africans who come to visit Italy,
  • SALE FOOD unit that will offer African food products and organize catering offering an extensive menu of African cuisine,
  • an EDUCATION unit that will aim to disseminate African culture through workshops, training experiences and intercultural exchanges.

The event exposed the results achieved by the project and the objectives of the participants in the near future. The women told their experience and the ambitions of an association that wants to become a point of reference in Palermo for the spread of African culture and the exchange of knowledge between the two continents.

The event ended with a social aperitif and the dances thanks to the music of the DouDou group.
