On September 30th, Youth for Peace in the Mediterranean arrived at the University of Palermo. Thanks to the support of Professor Marilena Macaluso, we were able to discuss social justice within the workshop course on Political Communication.

The dossier “Education for Peace and Justice in the Mediterranean” was provided to the students, whom we will meet again in the coming weeks to gather their opinions and suggestions on how to adapt this conceptual handbook to their generation. It is especially important for us to learn from young people how to adapt our language, using new means and methods that can make social justice and peace appealing in the eyes of younger generations — both in contexts of stability and in situations at risk of marginalization and vulnerability.

Participants discussed what it means to live in a condition where rights are guaranteed, where principles of equity prevail — in short, where peace is not a negative peace to be understood as the mere absence of war, but a positive peace, a foundation for the enjoyment of everyone’s civil and political rights.

We can’t wait to gather all the ideas that the people we work with will share with us, continually renewing our hope of working together toward a fairer and more cohesive world.

Positive peace as a precondition for social justice

Positive peace as a precondition for social justice

As the project that brought us together to work on social justice and peace in the Mediterranean comes to an end, we would like to share how we have interpreted these concepts in our local Sicilian context and how we have strengthened them after meeting young people from Tunisia, Morocco, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, France, and Spain.
