In the Mediterranean region, peace education and social justice emerge as a key priority. Marginalised communities, often affected by severe forms of discrimination, highlight the urgent need to strengthen the skills of youth workers, transforming them into promoters of peace and communicators of the fundamental values of social justice.

It is precisely in response to this strategic need that the Youth for Peace in the Mediterranean initiative was established.

After two years of training sessions, international meetings, and the creation of manuals and activities to promote the concept of positive peace and social justice, we gathered in Rabat—together with young people from local universities—to discuss how to continue promoting positive peace actions across different regions: from Spain to Lebanon, from Morocco to Italy, from Tunisia to France, and including Jordan.

The commitment of the partner organizations has had a strong impact on the awareness of young people and youth workers in the project’s target countries. The manuals produced, the co-created activities, and the external communication efforts have helped spread new models of non-formal education focused on rights and justice. In particular, the methodologies inspired by Amartya Sen’s capabilities approach, intersectionality, and a strong focus on multiculturalism and interculturality make it possible to advance the theoretical framework of peace education—by decentering, decolonizing, and re-signifying it within the Mediterranean context.

Thanks to the active participation of students from Moroccan universities, the project representatives were able to engage in dialogue about perceptions of peace in the southern Mediterranean, initiating a process of exchange and needs assessment that will help reconceptualize the materials and adapt them to local contexts.

We are proud to have contributed to the creation of positive communities dedicated to conflict resolution and to the deep analysis of inequalities that limit our capacity to live in peace.

Positive peace as a precondition for social justice

Positive peace as a precondition for social justice

As the project that brought us together to work on social justice and peace in the Mediterranean comes to an end, we would like to share how we have interpreted these concepts in our local Sicilian context and how we have strengthened them after meeting young people from Tunisia, Morocco, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, France, and Spain.
