Peer Education for Trafficking prevention – 30/05/10
This project has been developed through the recognition that trafficking is becoming a more and more relevant problem in certain countries, and there is a lack of information about how destructive it can be for the society. A solution is highly nedded in both sending and host counties which are affected by this issue.
The TC will focus on the peer education as a tool to work for trafficking prevention in both sending and host countries.
“Peer education for trafficking prevention” is a TC under the 3.1 Youth in Action Programme, that will be held in Palermo (Italy) during 8 days. It involves people from 23 organisations: 13 partners from Italy, Bulgaria, Estonia, Hungary, Lithuania, Malta, Portugal, Romania and Spain, and 10 partners from the 7 countries of Eastern Europe and the Caucasus region: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldavia, Russian Federation and Ukraine. It aims is to teach young people and youth workers to become peer educators in trafficking prevention and awareness-raising, and to fight against discrimination that people trafficked suffer in the countries of destination. The TC includes a theoretical part introducing concepts as trafficking, differences with other phenomena like smuggling or prostitution, peer education, Human Rights, gender, countries of origin, transit and destination of trafficking and internal trafficking, etc. In the practical part, participants will actively construct alternatives pathways to the trafficking through some workshops like peer theatre or the Reciprocal Maieutic Approach. The result will be the built of competences on peer education and the promotion of the collaboration in the youth field for the fight against trafficking in Europe, Eastern Europe and Caucasus, by understanding the phenomenon as a whole to be eliminated through the cooperation of young people and youth workers.
Objectives of the course: To promote the exchange of information and knowledge between sending and host countries concerning the issue of trafficking of women; to increase participants knowledge concerning the issue of trafficking from a human rights approach; to endorse peer education as a useful tool in trafficking prevention and awareness; to promote a bigger understanding about how peer education can be used in trafficking prevention and awareness both in sending and host countries; to provide participants with specific knowledge, information and tools to be used in peer education contexts in trafficking prevention and awareness; to encourage new partnerships between partners and the implementation of local peer education projects as project follow up.
Working with the youth, the issue becomes specially difficult to face, because of their lack of information and resources to escape from the trafficking networks and from situations of discrimination and marginalization. For that, the main methodology of this project will be the peer education between young people for human trafficking prevention. This methodology is a non-formal learning process giving empowerment, confidence and independence to young people whatever their background. In peer education young people receive training to develop a programme themselves to pass on a certain messages to their peers. Peer education is beneficial for all parties involved: the peer educators gain self-confidence, self-esteem and a number of skills. Their peers receive valuable information in an enjoyable way from someone they know and trust, and they might get stimulated to become a peer educator themselves. For youth work and the youth worker it presents a way of passing on knowledge to a bigger group of young people who can, in their turn, address a larger group again. We believe that this method is an excellent tool to raise awareness of the youth about human trafficking prevention.
