After finishing my studies in Spain, I decided to do something new, something different in my life, something I would never regret.
At the end of last year, after thinking about it for a long time, I finally decided to embark on a volunteer project.
My arrival in Palermo went well; there were no problems during the trip and, honestly, I was really looking forward to starting my project. However, the first few weeks were really difficult, in fact, the most difficult of the whole volunteer experience. After all, it is never easy to leave the people you love for a “long” period of time; in my case, almost six months. I even thought about going back, but fortunately everything changed when I started my activities.
I have had the privilege of working with several very different organisations, but all of them have left a deep impression on me. Among these is a social centre that cares for people with both physical and mental disabilities. The welcome and warmth I received from day one were incredible. It is an environment where, even in difficult times, there is always a reason to smile. I shared moments of joy, laughed, got emotional and took part in various activities, finding enjoyment in every moment I spent there. The memories I carry with me are indelible.
Another centre I was able to work with during my experience is a centre for children living in difficult circumstances. At first, it was a little difficult to adapt and be accepted, which is understandable. After a while, however, the situation changed and I was able to discover their uniqueness and qualities. I really enjoyed spending the afternoons with them, playing and doing activities, and I learned to enjoy every moment. I still get emotional when I receive their hugs. It will be difficult to forget them; they made me feel part of their lives and I thank them for that.
As for you, Palermo, thank you so much; you have taught me so much. I have met incredible people during my stay here, and I definitely want to thank CESIE and each of its workers for making this possible today, and also for helping me throughout the project. I always felt supported when I needed it, and I thank you for that.
In short, thank you all from the bottom of my heart for this wonderful experience. A very big piece of my heart remains here. Palermo, you will always be like my second home. I will always carry you with me, don’t doubt it, and I will come back to visit you very soon, I promise.
Sincerely and with tears in my eyes,
