How do students experience the school environment?
What do teachers and the rest of the school community need in terms of their everyday surroundings?

The workshop, ‘An innovative approach to regenerate educational spaces through co-design with students, teachers and the community’, organised as part of the UpSpace: Upcycling and Regeneration of urban Space for green skills project aims to offer to the school communities a fresh perspective on their school spaces by inviting them to consider their value and how these spaces can be transformed.

Why to participate

The workshop aims to raise participants’ awareness of urban and educational regeneration processes by encouraging them to observe, listen, imagine and be creative, in order to reflect on how space can influence the students’ learning paths and the well-being of the school community.

Through a participatory co-design process, students, teachers and educators will be involved in re-evaluating forgotten or underused school spaces, imagining the ideal school environment.

This activity encourages experimentation through collaborative processes and introduces the theme of urban regeneration. Participants will analyse the needs of the school community and the structural characteristics of the selected spaces, developing creative and sustainable ideas.

Through group work, participants will develop shared projects that consider functionality and sustainability, thereby providing their school with a renewed space.

The activity will conclude with the practical design of these proposals using recycled materials and creative recycling techniques.

Workshop stages

1. Identifying the space

We will identify spaces in the participants’ schools for observation and analysis. How are these spaces used today? How are they perceived by those who use them (students, teachers, educators)?

2. Needs analysis

Through group activities and listening sessions, we will identify the needs and desires of students, teachers, and educators in order to understand how to restore the chosen spaces.

3. Design process

We will turn our ideas into a practical project using recycled materials and creative recycling techniques to provide the school community with renovated, sustainable spaces.
