Local Educational Units: learning in the community, creating employment opportunities

EDU4IND info corner – EU School 2026

How can we promote independence and inclusion in the workplace for young people with intellectual disabilities through community-based learning experiences?

For young people with intellectual disabilities, building their own future also means having the chance to develop independence, pursue their aspirations and find their place in the world of work. This journey, however, can be hindered by educational opportunities that are not sufficiently tailored to their needs, inadequate support services, and social and cultural barriers. These difficulties become even more significant for those who are not in education, employment or training (NEETs), who risk being excluded from experiences that are fundamental to their personal and professional development.

It is in response to these challenges that ED4IND – Educate for Independence was launched, an initiative that promotes educational pathways based on young people’s abilities, interests and aspirations, with the aim of strengthening their independence, life skills and opportunities for inclusion in the workplace.

As part of EU SCHOOL 2026, you will have the opportunity to gain an in-depth understanding of ED4IND’s experiences and outcomes through two sessions dedicated to Local Educational Units (UETs). This is an opportunity to explore this educational model in greater depth, share best practice and discuss the role that businesses, institutions and communities can play in creating more accessible and inclusive opportunities for young people with intellectual disabilities.

We look forward to seeing you

Tuesday 20 and Wednesday 21 October 2026 | 3.00 pm–7.00 pm

Officine Bellotti – Via Antonio Gagini 31, Palermo

During the sessions, you’ll have the opportunity to learn about the stories, experiences and achievements of ED4IND, gaining an in-depth understanding of the Territorial Educational Units (UET) model, which takes learning beyond traditional settings through practical activities in the community and in the workplace, fostering the development of young people’s independence and skills.

The activities will also provide a forum for discussion on the role that communities, businesses, institutions and organisations can play in creating more accessible pathways, capable of harnessing the potential of the younger generation and encouraging their participation in social and working life.

Why take part

The sessions are aimed at businesses, public bodies, civil society organisations, and professionals interested in issues relating to disability, independence and inclusion in the workplace.

An opportunity to learn about an educational model that places the individual and the local community at its heart, to share experiences and to reflect on how to create new opportunities for learning and employment for young people with intellectual disabilities.

Participation is free of charge. Click here to book your place.
