Behind the pages and screen – Two evening reflections about bodies, emancipation stories, and freedom to exist

Cinema, literature and activism meet at BOOQ to explore the frontiers of representation and contemporary rights

On Monday 6 and Wednesday 8 July 2026, the BOOQ Palermo community space will host two community events dedicated to reflection, listening, and dialogue on issues related to rights, identities, and the representation of bodies in contemporary society.

Through the visual power of cinema and the expressive force of literature, Bottom-up talks sets out two key steps towards redefining our perception of bodies and deconstructing the dominant narratives of today’s society.

Monday 6 July, 20:00 | Body as political space: film screening and debate

The first event will feature visual storytelling on women’s and gender emancipation. From 8.00 pm, we will welcome you with the screening of the documentary Il corpo è di tutte (The Body Belongs to Everyone), with directors Mapi Rizzo and Martina Riina in attendance.

A story that explores experiences, rights and representations of the body in contemporary Palermo society.

Wednesday 8 July, 17:30 | Identity with no labels and transitional poetics

The second event, on Wednesday 8 July, will take the form of a participatory workshop on identities without labels, promoted by CESIE ETS and Handala, followed by the presentation of the book Trans. Una poetica del paradosso, and a conversation with its author Sandra Cane, activist Celeste Siciliano and educator Marina Castañares.

Why participate

Through cinema and literature, these two evenings will provide an open forum to share your thoughts, ask questions and have a discussion in an informed and respectful manner.

To foster dialogue and informal networking, and to keep the conversation flowing in a safe, informed and welcoming atmosphere, both evenings will be paired with a happy hour.
